Thistlegorm Wreck and Diving


Thistlegorm the ship of Joseph Thompson & Sons of Sunderland was launched in June 1940. Thistlegorm was 126.5m in length and 4,898 gross tonnes were displaced by it. The ship had a triple-expansion, 3-cylinder steam engine that generated about 365 horsepower. The ship was among the one was of the “Thistle" ships developed and operated by Albyn Line. The ship mainly was developed for the war duties and in the year 1941 the ship sank. And now the ship is one of the major attractions of the Red Sea for the wreck divers and the Thistlegorm wreck diving is on of the primary diving spot in Red Sea. Every year thousands of divers travel to Red Sea to dive and see the Thistlegorm wreck.

Red Sea has a lot of shipwrecks explored by the divers but the Thistlegorm wreck has got a special reputation among the divers and they have a special respect for Thistlegorm wreck and every year divers visits here. For the very first time Jacques Cousteau discovered Thistlegorm wreck in the year 1956 and since then the prominence of Thistlegorm wreck has grown tremendously and now it is one of the most famous wrecks which the divers visits every year. The reason behind the wreck of Thistlegorm is expected to be a German bomb that hit it in the ignition chamber and made the ship sank. Thistlegorm wreck diving is a unique experience for anyone and there is a lot on Thistlegorm wreck, which can give you an amazing experience of diving. At the first level of Thistlegorm wreck you can see the trucks and bikes which were on the ship when it sank. Then at the second level you can see bows and anchors and also you can visit the captain’s bathroom. The entire experience of watching the wreck of a fine war ship is hard to be described and seeing it with your eyes is the best way to discover what the Thistlegorm wreck is all about. This is why the Thistlegorm wreck is one of the most visited wrecks by the divers in Red Sea. The Thistlegorm is a busy diving spot in Red Sea and if you are planning to dive on Thistlegorm wreck then the best time to visit is early in the morning and most of the divers prefers this time. This wreck has plenty of penetration opportunities and hence you can explore your own world on that wreck. So if you are diving on shipwrecks in Red Sea make sure it is Thistlegorm wreck, it is the best one.

If you like scuba diving or snorkeling then Sharm el Naga is the place to visit. Just a couple of miles outside Hurghada and the beach and reef is superb for us diving/scuba diving beginners..
